The first book written by a nurse in Portugal (1741)

This study is aimed at analyzing the concepts of nursing metaparadigm enrolled in knowledge and practice of the Portuguese religious nurses who attended the patient in XVIIII century. We conducted a documental research, using the historical method. We used as main source of research the "Postilla Religiosa", by Fr. Diogo de Santiago, published in 1741. It is the first Portuguese book written by a nurse for the education of others nurses. Data were grouped starting from previously defined categories, which set new categories: Human-being/Patient; Assistance/care; Elements of humors; Illness. The analysis of book's content has enabled us to realize that the main concepts in the practices of nurses have similarities with the theoretical assumptions of Kerouac. These results contribute to the identification of knowledge and practices of the early Portuguese nursing.
