Abstract

Therapeutic massage is a type of mechanical rubefacients recorded since the beginning of the professionalization of nursing in Brazil. This study aimed to describe the massage techniques for nurses in the first records between 1932 to 1941. This is a historical and descriptive study of nursing care, with articles and books written by doctors and nurses. The results show that nurses used massage in hospitals and homes under medical supervision. The reference and execution of
the maneuvers was the Swedish system of massage, followed in part or full. There was indication of massage to collection of biological material for laboratory tests. It is concluded that nurses seek the correct execution of the maneuvers, and associate, record and spread the practice to anatomical knowledge, especially of the muscular system. Thus, the first Brazilian graduate nurses were important professional and social elements in the development of professional massage in
Brazil.
