Abstract

This paper aims to identify and describe the therapeutic practices embedded in the universe of traditional and popular medicine in the city of Paraíba/Brazil in the period 1889 to 1920.Historical in nature, anchored in the conception of history of mentalities. It was prepared based on documents released in that period and given over to practice traditional healing and healing practitioners, arranged in the form of articles published in newspapers, magazines and almanacs texts, among others. The information found in the sources consulted were classified into the prepared herbal medicine, bloodletting and leeches, naturism, homeopathy, pharmacy and other homemade popular therapeutic treatment. The practices identified were anchored in tradition, custom and precepts Hippocrates and Galen. We observed the presence of conflicts regarding the permanence of traditional healing practices in a context that was spread deployment of appropriate action regarding the model police campaign. The tensions were most evident among medical officers and representatives of the current naturist. For with other practices, in place of conflict, there was tolerance.
