Contributions of Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory to the prevention and treatment of COVID-19

This is an exploratory and descriptive study, of a qualitative nature, carried out with the objective of evaluating the contribution of Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory in the formulation of measures to face the current pandemic caused by COVID-19. There is still no vaccine, nor drugs with proven efficacy for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. In this context, the consideration of other elements that promote the recovery of patients, such as environmental factors (cleaning, air, lighting, heating, silence), can contribute to reducing the lethality rate of the virus. Based on a review of the literature on the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the influence of the theory developed by Florence Nightingale on the formulation of the protocol to contain the epidemic outbreak of COVID-19 prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) was evaluated. After the analysis, it was found a correspondence between the measures recommended by Nightingale and the WHO regarding the need to adopt more rigorous cleaning and hygiene habits to avoid contagion. Furthermore, it was identified that, although most of Nightingale's recommendations regarding patient care are easy to apply, these measures are not part of the WHO protocol.
