Abstract

Objective: to show that the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn) has given technical-scientific and sociocultural contributions to Brazilian Nursing, throughout its 90 years of existence. Method: This was a qualitative study, whose data collection was performed through documentary analysis and semistructured interviews, conducted with members of ABEn’s board of directors. The data were analyzed according to the methodology of content analysis of Bardin. Results: 3 categories were found: ABEn contributions to the Brazilian Nursing; Strengthening Nursing through its collectives – participation in ABEn; and Challenges of citizen action by nursing; the findings reflect that ABEn has effectively given relevant contributions to Brazilian nursing. Conclusion: Despite its history of contributions,
the number of ABEn members is still very small in relation to the number of nursing professionals in the country, making it necessary to give greater visibility to the Entity, leading to the recognition that strengthening ABEn is to strengthen Brazilian nursing.
