Higher education and the brazilian nursing association
contributions to the development and memories of the profession in the West of Santa Catarina

Qualitative research, with a narrative historical design, developed in the West of Santa Catarina. The data was produced through semi-structured interviews, applied between the months of May 2016 and May 2017 to four nurses who participated in the nursing trajectory in the region. The aim of the study was to investigate the extent to which the implantation of nursing higher education courses and the construction of the Brazilian Association of Nursing Section Santa Catarina (ABEn-SC) Chapecó Nucleus contributed to the development of nursing in the West of Santa Catarina from the point of view of protagonists of this history. The results show that the creation of higher education nursing courses and, consequently, the incorporation of scientific knowledge into the profession, in addition to the construction of the ABEn-SC Chapecó Nucleus, are set as historical milestones for the construction and development of nursing in this region. It is observed that the West of Santa Catarina faced obstacles to the development of nursing, however, the precursor nurses of this history have been building a scenario based on comprehensive and qualified nursing care, which is mainly
due to the process of qualification of professional training and the strengthening of class entities.
